SNAKE PLANT Care Guide & Presentation

How much light does my Snake Plant need?

Snake Plants are incredibly adaptable — they toleratelow, medium, and bright light, but thrive best in bright, indirect light.

Best placement:Close to an east-facing window, or a few feet from a south or west-facing window.

If the light is too low:Snake Plants will survive in dim corners, but growth will slow and leaf colour may become less vibrant.

If the light is too strong:Can cause leaf scorch or bleaching, especially in UAE summer afternoons.

How often should I water my Snake Plant?

Water every 2–4 weeks, depending on the amount of light it gets. Always let the soil dry out completely before watering again.

How to check: Stick your finger deep into the soil — if it feels dry all the way down, it’s time to water.

Why this matters: Snake Plants are succulents, storing water in their thick leaves. Not letting the soil dry out completely can cause root rot.

Watering tip: When watering your plant, evenly water the entire soil mixture until you see water draining from the bottom of the nursery pot. After allowing all the excess water to drain out, discard that water.

When should I repot my Snake Plant?

Repot every 2–3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound (roots circling and pushing against the pot). Whichever comes first.

Why not repot right away? Like most indoor plants, Snake Plants need time to adjust to their new environment after purchase. Immediate repotting can stress the plant.

Best time to repot: October to May, when the plant is actively growing.

Do I need to fertilize my Snake Plant?

Yes! Snake Plants benefit from regular fertilizing. If you live in the UAE, fertilize once a month from October to May, when your Snake Plant is actively growing.

During the peak summer months (June–September), growth will slow due to extreme heat, so reduce or pause fertilizing if your plant isn’t actively growing. Over-fertilizing can stress the plant and lead to leaf burn.

Can I use UAE tap water to water my Snake Plant?

Yes — Snake Plants are highly tolerant of the minerals and chloramine in UAE tap water. In the wild, they often grow in rocky soils and drink from mineral-rich water sources, making them far less sensitive than tropical plants.

Better options: Filtered water or distilled water, especially if you notice leaf tip browning.

To distill water, boil in a kettle at 100 degrees celsius and allow the water to cool down to room temperature overnight.

Will my Snake Plant get bigger over time?

Yes — but growth speed depends on light levels. In bright light, leaves can grow taller and new shoots will appear more often. Indoors, most varieties reach 60–90cm in height.

Is my Snake Plant safe for pets?

No — Snake Plants contain saponins that can cause vomiting and drooling in cats and dogs if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets.

Why are the leaves of my Snake Plant changing colour?

Yellow leaves: Often due to overwatering or poor drainage.

Wrinkled or curling leaves: Usually a sign of underwatering or very low humidity.

Brown tips: Can be caused by inconsistent watering or prolonged exposure to hot, dry air.

Does my Snake Plant need humidity?

No — Snake Plants prefer dry air. In fact, their natural desert environments often have humidity as low as 10–20%. They’ve adapted by storing water in their leaves and developing a thick, waxy coating that reduces water loss.

Why this matters indoors: Normal UAE indoor humidity levels are perfectly fine — no humidifier or misting needed.

Can I keep my Snake Plant in an air conditioned room?

Yes — Snake Plants are resilient to AC environments, as long as they are not placed directly under a vent where cold air blows constantly.
